This state of being, which previously was commonly used without real definition, is today qualified as a syndrome resulting from stress often starting in the workplace. It is a feeling of exhaustion and inefficiency. This burnout syndrome worries 63% of French employees and affects over 40% of the US workforce. Companies now have to react.

Work is no longer just a source of income; we are now talking about fulfillment at work. It has become a major feature for many of us. So, before applying to a company, many of us also make sure that it does not impact on our well-being.

Many companies are integrating this concept into their internal management. We are now talking about QWL, quality of working life. The objective of this approach is to improve living conditions in the workplace on a daily basis. It includes all the factors to feel good and perform better regardless of one’s position. It includes health, interest, safety, relationships, the environment, and the processes to implement to feel good.

This shift has multiple reasons. Many burnout (and even suicide) cases resulted from a lack of recognition of employees’ well-being. With burn-out companies also see increased turnover, bore-out (boredom at work), stress, chronic fatigue, etc. These conditions have proved to be very costly for companies (over $300B worldwide), but also for the employees themselves.

Quality of life at work is not free, it requires a constant investment from companies to maintain well-being daily. However, this investment is beneficial for each of the parties over the long term. Make sure you share the same values as the company you are applying to. You will feel better and it will improve your integration within the team. From then on, you will more easily evolve within the company if your values are aligned.

You can quizz the employees during the interview process to evaluate the atmosphere within the company. Do not be afraid, they will say it if they are not happy, and if they are, they will let you know!

Let’s face it, productivity and well-being are two interrelated and complimentary terms, but they can also quickly become contradictory. We must, therefore, ensure that one does not take precedence over the other.

  •  Stress can sometimes boost your productivity, but when it’s too strong, it will overwhelm you and make you unproductive. Take care of yourself, you’re not a machine, trust yourself and everything will be fine!
