Like too many people, we've watched loved ones struggle with their mental health. We've seen the good days and the bad days. We've celebrated small victories and sat through dark nights. And some of us have faced losing someone to suicide.
When that happens, the questions are haunting: Could I have seen the signs? What if they'd had better support? What could have been different? Are they making progress?
Talking with mental health professionals, we kept hearing the same stories: by the time most people seek help, they're already in crisis. It's not that people don't care about their mental health—it's that we often don't recognize our own decline until we're already struggling to stay afloat. The longer the wait, the more complex, and complicated the healing journey.
And then there's the stigma. Despite all the talk about mental health awareness, the numbers don't lie. Suicide rates continue to rise, especially among certain age groups. People still whisper about therapy. They still worry about using their company's EAP resources because "what if someone finds out?"
We found ourselves asking: What if checking in on your mental wellness could be as normal as checking your blood pressure? What if we could create something that helps people see themselves clearly, before they're in crisis?
Our "aha" moment came unexpectedly. Greg, one of our co-founders, was testing high-performance cameras through Intel's Software Innovators program. He hooked his bike up to a stationary system, strapped on his heart rate monitor, and noticed something remarkable—the camera was accurately detecting his heart rate, nearly matching his medical device.
At that moment, we glimpsed the future: technology —with care and science—could help us understand our mental state too.
Our team came together organically. Some of us had worked together for decades; others brought fresh perspectives from different fields. What connects us isn't just professional backgrounds—it's the shared belief that technology, built responsibly, can help people understand themselves better.
The societal cost of mental health challenges is too enormous to ignore. It affects not just individuals but entire communities and workplaces. That's why we designed Okaya to work on two levels: empowering individuals with insights about their own wellbeing while also helping organizations support their people more effectively.
We believe organizations have both a responsibility and an opportunity to foster environments where mental wellness thrives. By providing anonymized, aggregated insights to organizations, we help them understand patterns and needs without compromising individual privacy. This dual approach means better support systems, more targeted resources, and cultures that truly prioritize wellbeing—not just with words, but with action.
We've learned a lot building Okaya. We've seen firsthand how many AI tools are built on problematic data that doesn't represent the diversity of human experience. That's why we committed to developing our own research datasets, studying potential biases, and building technology that works for everyone.
We believe you deserve to know why our technology makes the recommendations it does. No black boxes here—just clear insights that help you connect the dots of your own experience.
We want clarity, transparency, and insight. Because ultimately, that's what we're trying to create: a clearer window into your own mental wellness, and tools that help you take care of yourself before you reach a breaking point.
This work matters to us personally. When we improve our technology or hear from someone who found it helpful, we think about the people we couldn't help in time. We think about creating a world where fewer families have to ask themselves what they could have done differently.
Our values guide everything we do at Okaya, from product development to team interactions.
We exist to protect and uplift. Our tech must help humans become better, not broken.
You own your data. We're just custodians—no EULAs, no fine print, no loopholes, no exceptions.
If it's not right, we don't do it. Integrity is our default, not a buzzword.
Mental health is universal and personal. Our tools adapt to real lives, cultures, and needs.
Speak the truth, with heart. Honest, direct feedback makes us better—individually and together.
We're building a team, not a battlefield. Respect and kindness are non-negotiable.
Lift others up. Mentor. Share. Build value beyond the company.
We prioritize physical, emotional, and mental well-being—in our product and our workplace.
We grow through curiosity and courage. Failure teaches. Learning never stops.
We push boundaries to improve lives. Innovation only matters if it serves people.
